Lesson 1 - Role of the producer

In our first lesson we watched a behind the scenes footage of a day in the life working on the set of Game of Thrones. The video mainly focused on the roll of the producers and what they have to do.

Key things I learnt from the video:

  • Producers have to organise all of the locations and sets, ensuring that the public/tourists aren't going to affect filming, creating compromises to ensure the locations are empty.
  • The same scene can be filmed in two different countries so they after to maintain continuity by sending pictures to the other locations, to make sure the hair, makeup and costume are all exactly the same.
  • Everyday on set they have notes on every scene, the state what advancements need making.
  • Have to constantly communicate with the directors and producers who are in different locations/countries.
  • In relation to extras, they make sure all the hair, makeup and costume is appropriate for the scene and will then pick out the extras that they want in the scene, the ones they think will fit the best. They are also uncharge of the initial casting process.
  • Have to be at every shoot before the actors and crew arrive to prep for the shoot, have the work very fast paced.
  • Checking on the actors to make sure they feel comfortable with everything or need any help with anything.
  • There are many different producers on big projects; as well as there being more than one director, all of whom have to communicate with each other and share visions for continuity purposes.
